Starting Her Business
Hi Kelli! I’m so excited to feature you on EvolvingMompreneur.com. Let’s start the interview off by beginning at the beginning. What made you decide to start your own business?
Two things: one, I am a proud military spouse who learned immediately that I wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom as soon as our first was born so I could be a stable parent in our household. I wanted to be home with him while also bringing in some extra income where I could set my own hours and boundaries and have a great family/work balance because family always comes first. Now my husband is still military, a police officer, firefighter and EMT so I still need/want to be that stable parent even as our children get older.Reason number two is my son. From the moment we brought him home from the hospital (I say we, but my husband was deployed and didn’t come home until he was almost 3 months old) he would wake up 7-10 times a night until he was 2.5 years old when I hired a consultant to help me through the sleep training process using a gentle method (vs what my pediatrician was recommending), and within 4 nights he was sleeping through the night and I immediately knew I needed to be a part of other families having this life changing moment.
Wow! That’s certainly an impressive “why”! I’d love to learn more about your journey to becoming a mompreneur.
Like I said in the previous question, after working with our own sleep consultant, a lightbulb went off in my head that THIS was what I was meant to do. Then, just this year, another lightbulb went off telling me I needed to be a postpartum doula so I could help support other mothers (and their families) in that transitional time of bring a newborn home because of my personal experience with having family support but not having my husband home and then having to figure out how to become a family of three after he returned home from his deployment (hello, welcome back to civilian life, I missed you, you’re now a father and this is how we’ve been surviving, jump right in)!
Congrats on becoming a doula! That’s incredible. Was this always part of your career path?
Actually, I was previously a teacher! I have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and another in TESOL and a master’s degree in special education. I taught for 2 years before having my son. My passion has always been kids and families, so I still get that fulfillment, just in a different way!
Wonderful! And maybe I got a little ahead of myself, but I’d love to know – how did you get the idea to start your business and become a sleep consultant?
I didn’t even know sleep consultants existed until I saw a fellow Army spouse post that she just became one and was looking for volunteer families to help her fulfill her training requirements and I immediately signed up, thinking it couldn’t get any worse than it already was.
Thankfully, we know it got better from there! But we all know that starting a business isn’t without its challenges. What was the most challenging part of starting Silver Moon Sleep Consulting?
All of it! I think I was pretty naïve when it came to knowing what starting my own business would be like. I didn’t even think about the business side of things like building your website, marketing, and taxes. I also didn’t think it would be so difficult to spread the word that sleep consultants were available and a great support system for tired families so changing the narrative of people thinking sleep training is just leaving your child to cry-it-out to educating them on gentler methods that their values would align with.
More About Silver Moon Sleep Consulting
Tell our audience more about Silver Moon Sleep Consulting. What services do you offer tired moms (and dads)?
My business has two parts. I have been a pediatric sleep consultant for 7 years now which means I work with exhausted parents and help them teach their child how to fall asleep independently and sleep through the night using a gentle, personalized sleep plan and 1-1 support. I am their accountability partner, sleep consultant bff, and biggest cheerleader through what can be a very vulnerable time. As a postpartum doula, I provide compassionate support and guidance to new parents during the crucial early weeks and months after childbirth. From assisting with newborn care and feeding to offering emotional support and practical help around the house, I strive to create a nurturing environment where families can thrive. My goal is to empower parents, ease their transition into parenthood, and ensure they feel confident and well-supported during this special time.
I think your goal of empowering parents is amazing. How do you see your business evolving further with this mission?
Short-term, I want to grow my postpartum doula part of my business, I was just certified a few weeks ago and still trying to figure out how to market that part of my business. A long-term goal of mine is to have a brick and mortar to be a one-stop-shop for women; having businesses geared towards postpartum women like myself, birth doulas, lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapist etc.
